Looking for a simple and stylish DIY project? I recently tried an easy IKEA hack that transformed a plain wooden pepper grinder into a chic kitchen statement piece, with just a bit of paint and creativity. Here's how I did it, step-by-step!
The IKEA Find: Wooden Pepper Grinder
On a recent trip to the new IKEA Oxford Street store in London, I spotted a beautiful simple wooden pepper grinder (INTRESSANT) in the market hall. I loved the minimalist design and solid feel, but I knew it had the potential to be something a bit more 'me'.
Why Upcycle?
Upcycling is a great way to give everyday items a personal touch, creating a custom kitchen accessory that’s both practical and unique, I actually find it super relaxing and truly enjoy it.
What I Used
IKEA INTRESSANT wooden pepper grinder
Paint in two tones (I used a pale pink and a bright red left over from some wall paint samples from Farrow and Ball!)
Clear sealant spray - I used the Dekor one
Paint It Up
I applied two coats of paint, allowing time to dry in between. I went for a coloured stripe, I've been loving pink and red recently so just went for it.
I've been loving vintage circus designs so went for a font that was inspired by this!
Adding details
I added some gold leaf that I got from amazon to make it feel extra special in the details of the font and on the rime and I'm so happy with how it turned out, so easy but so elegant! Literally stick on and brush off!
Seal for Protection
Once the paint was dry, I sealed it with a clear coat spray to protect the finish and keep it wipeable.
Let It Cure
I gave the grinder 24 hours to cure before using it and it’s been working like a charm!
IKEA Hack: The Result
My upcycled IKEA pepper grinder now adds a pop of style to my countertop. It’s amazing what a bit of paint can do! I've always loved a bit of upcycling, espcially when you find pieces that are budget-friendly and can get super creative to make them your new personal piece.
Final Thoughts
If you’re after a quick and easy DIY, this IKEA hack is a great place to start. Whether you’re a seasoned upcycler or a total beginner, a little creativity goes a long way (and your kitchen will thank you for it!).
