I've shared a few up-cycled vintage pieces that I've found to transform in my local charity shops on instagram recently and you guys had plenty of questions! So I thought I would talk you through how to up-cycle and paint ceramics at home!
Learning how to paint ceramic at home is super handy for you arts and crafts lovers and I don't know about you but I love having a little project during the winter months.
Why not start the new year with a new look by transforming ceramics. I love that you can personalise anything with the right paint and can even gift to others (which is literally how I started this business!).
First of all, you're going to need something to paint on! I can't resist charity shop browsing for a bargain. Sometimes you can get really lucky in a charity shop and sometimes you find absolutely nothing, but hunting for gems is all part of the fun. London has so many, you will find what you're looking for eventually!
I usually just visit Crouch End Charity Shops, there are quite a few in a short distance so your chances of finding something is fairly high.
Next, you'll need to prep. Make sure your piece is clean and dry before you paint anything on there. I usually just go for it but I know some of you prefer to practice on some paper before so it's up to you how you get started on the design.
I have found the best paints for ceramics on amazon linked here. I find the colours perfect for what I like to paint but they're also great for building colour, they set really well too. They also wipe away easily before fixing so don't worry about mistakes!
Have fun with it and try it out! I love testing new designs and find the ceramic transformation process really enjoyable.
Make sure you let the paint dry and then heat fix in the oven. I usually pop the piece in the oven for about 20 minutes at 160C to heat set the design (IMPORTANT! Leave in oven to cool!) and voila!
Tips for making painted ceramics last:
- I recommend only hand-washing
- Avoiding the microwave.
- As with anything hand-made it's best to be gentle!
This is actually how I started my business and still love doing it today!
Love, Yvonne xx
