Okay, I am becoming quite the expert now at IKEA hacks, but wow, I even impressed myself with this one!
It felt like I had morphed into an electrician for a brief moment, navigating the intricate world of plug rewiring – a daunting experience, I won't deny. But the results were more than worth it.
My journey began with an innocuous idea – I wanted to repurpose my beloved storage jar, the one that had dutifully held my tea bags for so long. It had to serve a new purpose, I thought. Why not turn it into a stunning decorative piece? On one of my MANY trips to Ikea, I picked up the IKEA FADO lamp. This is the perfect topper for my storage jar and gives off the most beautiful soft light.
So first things first… drill a hole in your favourite storage jar for the wire to go through, for reference I have used my zebra MEDIUM storage jar here. TOP TIP: masking tape the area where you are going to drill the hole to avoid cracks and fractures in your bone china jar.
Taking things up a notch, I decided to introduce a touch of opulence to my lamp project. A gold disc from Amazon served as both a pedestal and a source of added elegance. After all, there's no such thing as too much gold, right? To facilitate the wiring process, I drilled a hole in the gold disc as well, creating a seamless path for the wire to travel through.
Now, for the part that might seem a bit intimidating – rewiring the plug. To enable the wire to pass through the holes in the jar and the gold disc, I had to temporarily sever the plug from the wire. But here's where the genius of this project truly shines. After successfully threading the wire through both holes, I carefully reconnected the plug, ensuring that everything was snug and secure. Voilà, the plug rewiring was complete, and I had overcome a minor electrician's hurdle with flying colours.
With the essentials in place, I was eager to see my creation come to life. Using trusty no-nails glue, I fixed the gold disc to the storage jar, making sure the wire was already in place through the holes. I placed the bottom of the IKEA FADO lamp inside the gold disc and screwed in the lightbulb.
The final step is to place your IKEA FADO lampshade on top and TAH DAH! You now have a quirky, completely individual lamp that didn’t cost a bomb! IKEA hacks have become a personal passion, and this project, in particular, is a shining example of how a little ingenuity can illuminate your home, both literally and figuratively.
